In a world driven by speed, technology and constant noise, some stories unfold quietly – but leave a lasting impression. One of them belongs to 16-year-old Jelena Marjanović, who has chosen a life shaped by horses, nature and hard work on the slopes of Mount Grmeč.
Growing up surrounded by horses since the age of five, Jelena never attended a riding school or received formal training. Instead, she learned through patience, observation and countless hours spent with the animals, developing a deep understanding of their behavior and earning their trust.
“Horses taught me to understand them because, at first, I didn’t know their language or how to approach them,” Jelena says. “Spending time with these animals, especially in nature, is an incredible feeling. For me, it’s much more than a sport—it’s a way of life.”
While many teenagers spend their free time in cities or online, Jelena has embraced a different path. Life on Grmeč revolves around nature, responsibility and perseverance. She hopes to share that lifestyle with others by encouraging people to experience the peace of the countryside and reconnect with nature.
“I want people to see this way of life, to step away from technology for a while and escape the noise,” she explains. “At 1,051 meters above sea level, surrounded by fresh air, clean water and beautiful landscapes, you realize how much nature has to offer.”
Her passion is fully supported by her family. Her mother, Rada Marjanović, describes Jelena as an idealist whose love for horses has defined her from an early age.
“She has been devoted to horses since childhood,” says Rada. “She taught herself to ride and spends every possible moment training and caring for them. Her dream is to one day establish her own horse stud.”
Her father, Đoko Marjanović, remembers that Jelena’s love for horses was evident long before she ever owned one.
“Even at school, while other children drew different things, Jelena always drew horses,” he recalls. “When she fell in love with a golden foal in Drinić, we worked hard to surprise her with it. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth every effort. Today, I have no regrets – I know we’ve raised our children to become hardworking and honest people.”
At just sixteen years old, Jelena Marjanović has already discovered where she belongs. On the rugged landscapes of Mount Grmeč, she continues to build a future rooted in patience, dedication and respect for nature.
