The death toll from an earthquake in Afghanistan has risen to 1,124, the Afghan Red Crescent Society said.

The statement said 3,251 people were injured and more than 8,000 houses were destroyed, Reuters reported.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Sunday evening, near the city of Jalalabad, close to the border with Pakistan.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of ten kilometers.
