At least Three Million People in Sudan could die of Starvation

At least three million people in Sudan could die of starvation due to the protracted conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Force (RSF) paramilitary group, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) warned on Wednesday.

“Almost half of the country is in humanitarian need,” said IRC Sudan director Eatizaz Yusif.

The IRC is a global non-governmental organization for humanitarian aid and development, and was founded in 1933.

Yusif warned that three million people are on the verge of starvation.

“These are just preliminary numbers. It is unbelievable the number of people who report that they are slowly dying because there is chaos in the health system,” Yusif said.

She pointed out that the world does not pay too much attention to the African continent.

“I guess our geographical location is not as important as Palestine or Syria or even Ukraine. The Sudan crisis was before us and we never got that media attention,” she said.

She emphasized that she does not want to compare crises in the world because each one is difficult and serious enough.

“But I guess Sudan really needs to be at the center of diplomatic efforts and get more attention,” she added.

The conflict in Sudan erupted in April 2023 between army general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagal over a disagreement over the integration of the paramilitary group into the state army.

According to the United Nations (UN), the conflict killed almost 16,000 people, displaced millions and caused a real humanitarian crisis in the country, AA writes.
