Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country today as protesters calling for her resignation stormed the official residence in the capital Dhaka, local daily “Parthom Alo” reported.
Hasina resigned and went to West Bengal in India along with her sister Sheikh Rehana, the paper said.
The 76-year-old daughter of Bangladesh’s founder has ruled the nation of 170 million since 2009.
The country’s army chief, Waker-uz-Zaman, met with political party leaders and is set to address the nation.
Protests have been renewed in the South Asian country, calling for the government to resign. Violent protests in July previously demanded the abolition of the quota system in government jobs, AA writes.
