Becirovic after the Meeting with Schmidt: The Answer to the anti-Dayton Policy must be concrete and strong

The member of the BiH Presidency, Denis Bećirović, spoke with the High Representative in BiH, Christian Schmidt, about the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the light of serious attacks on the constitutional order and the recent sanctions imposed by the USA against political officials from BiH entity Republika Srpska.

During the conversation, Bećirović emphasized, among other things, that at this moment there is no more important topic than the protection of the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because it is a fundamental prerequisite for the intensification of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Politicians who underestimate or relativize the attack on the constitutional order work directly in favor of Milorad Dodik’s policy.

The latest American sanctions are justified and it is necessary to stop the attack on the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Key institutions that guarantee peace and security, namely the High Representative and the Constitutional Court of BiH, were attacked. These institutions cannot and must not be traded with actors who attack the constitutional order. The international community should end separatist activities as soon as possible with concrete measures, as well as dangerous attacks on the foundations of the Dayton Peace Agreement. It is better to use concrete measures to prevent the destruction of the Dayton Peace Agreement, than to allow irresponsible individuals to threaten thirty years of building peace and stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said Bećirović.

The High Representative said that the OHR is carefully following the development of the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is keeping all options open. All instruments to protect the Dayton Peace Agreement are on the table, Schmidt stressed.

Bećirović said that Bosnia and Herzegovina and the West are at a turning point. He said that the foundations of the Dayton Peace Agreement are under threat and that there must be no more concessions to destructive politics. He pointed out that the OHR, the countries that are witnesses to the Dayton Agreement and the legal authorities of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot and must no longer tolerate legal violence by the authorities of the RS entity, because it can have unforeseeable consequences.
