Becirovic: Work on building Two Key Bridges for BiH-towards the EU and NATO

Today, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Denis Bećirović laid flowers at the Kovača Cemetery and paid his respects as part of the commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the Battle for the Defense of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Today I am here to express my deep respect for the honorable and brave defenders. On this day, May 2, 1992, the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the capital of the state of BiH and the Presidency of BiH were defended. The Presidency of BiH symbolizes the sovereignty of the State of BiH and that is why today, among other things, and as a member of the Presidency of BiH, I want to point out the crucial importance of defending the Presidency of BiH during that period. Even today, in 2025, it should be said that the Presidency of BiH plays a very important role and that is why no one must allow whenever such a system comes, which will entail an asymmetric election of the members of the BiH Presidency,” said Bećirović.

He stressed that this should not even be negotiated, and added that in BiH we must work on building two key bridges of our state, namely the bridge to the European Union and the bridge to the NATO alliance.

Responding to a journalist’s question, Bećirović said that, unfortunately, policies that do not accept an independent, sovereign and indivisible BiH have never died, and that they are still trying to destabilize Bosnia and Herzegovina today.

“When it comes to Mr. Čović, he definitely does not act in the interests of either the Croatian people or Bosnia and Herzegovina. In a manual written by Kecmanović and Antic, called The History of Republika Srpska, it is written that Dragan Čović is one of the three key pillars of Greater Serbia politics. You should read that part carefully, they did not write that by chance,” said Bećirović.

He stressed that we need good cooperation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia, good cooperation between Bosniaks and Croats, good cooperation between all citizens and peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but that “Mr. Dragan Čović is causing great harm to Bosnia and Herzegovina”.

“When it comes to Dodik, all words have been used up about him. He is a political scoundrel, a person who plays on the field of primitivism. Unlike him, I play on the field of legal arguments and I will never allow myself to descend to his level. I have never in my life made a single statement that was in any way offensive to any people in Bosnia and Herzegovina or anywhere else. And I will never make such a statement. I respect all people equally and I think that the future of this country lies in mutual respect and turning to European and Euro-Atlantic integrations”, said Bećirović.

Speaking about what he expects from the UN Security Council session, Bećirović said that these are regular sessions and that last year he addressed only three UN Security Council sessions.

“The High Representative will submit a report. The majority of the Security Council knows very well who the main causes of the crisis in BiH are and there is no dilemma about that. It would be good if the member of the BiH Presidency, the current chairperson Željka Cvijanović, represented the views of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, because she is there on behalf of the BiH Presidency. However, judging by her views, she is obviously acting in an unconstitutional and illegal manner, contrary to all adopted strategies and laws of the state of BiH. Today I will inform the Secretary General of the United Nations, as well as the ambassadors to the United Nations Security Council, about this in detail,” said Bećirović.

As part of the celebration of the 33rd anniversary of the battle for the defense of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, flowers were laid and paid tribute at the Kovači Cemetery by, among others, delegations of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Coordination Board of Veterans’ Organizations of the Sarajevo Canton, the Assembly and Government of the Sarajevo Canton, the City of Sarajevo, and the municipalities of Stari Grad and Centar.

The event’s program also includes paying tribute and laying flowers at the “Lav” cemetery, the “Stadium” cemetery, the Central Memorial to Martyrs and Fallen Fighters of Novi Grad (in front of the Novi Grad Municipality building), and the “Vlakovo” cemetery in Veterans’ Alley.

33 years ago today, on May 2, 1992, a crucial battle for the defense of Sarajevo took place at Skenderija, when units of the then Yugoslav People’s Army attempted to seize the building of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The battle in which Sarajevo was defended on May 2, 1992, better known as the Battle for the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was crucial for the defense of the capital, but also for the defense of the independence and integrity of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, BHRT writes.
