Berbic sentenced to Three Years for joining Paramilitary Formations in Syria

The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina upheld the first-instance verdict against Milarem Berbic, sentencing him to three years in prison for joining foreign paramilitary or parapolice formations in Syria.

The appeal of the defense and the appeal of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH were completely rejected, so that the first-instance verdict was confirmed, to which there is no right to appeal, Birn reports.

On May 19, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina convicted Berbic in the first instance because he left Sarajevo in August 2014 with the aim of joining a foreign organization within the so-called Islamic State.

The Trial Chamber then concluded that Berbic had joined an organization in Syria with an unknown name led by Goran Pavlovic, and that he had been captured in early 2019, after which he was returned to BiH.

Berbic is the last of seven BiH citizens extradited from Syria in December 2019, who was given a second instance verdict.

Earlier, Muharem Dunic and Armen Dzelko were sentenced to three years and six months in prison each, Hamza Labidi to one year in prison, and Emir Alisic to two years and six months in prison.

They entered into a plea agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH. Senad Kasupovic was sentenced to four years in prison, while Jasmin Keserovic was sentenced to six years in prison.
