Lukomir Village travelobosnia.comUp to three meters high snow drifts on the road to the Bjelašnica village of Lukomir had been cleared since yesterday, and the road is to be passable for cars tomorrow, when the homes over 1.495 meters above sea level will again be unlocked.

“The Mayor of Trnovo Municipality Ibro Berilo has helped by engaging the machinery for snow clearing”, said Mujo Masleša, whose house in Lukomir is one of the 22 houses which have been locked since December last year, after which the village had been plunged into hibernation.

Nature lovers will be able to spend the Labor Day holiday and the upcoming weekend in Lukomir, thanks to the passable roads.

“Particularly happy are the villagers, who have been eagerly waiting to return to the village because of the grazing of their herds and seeding works” says Masleša adding that, since this morning, he had received dozens of phone calls from his neighbors who wonder if the road has been cleared.

There are about 3.000 sheep and cows in sheepfolds and barns of 15 Lukomir households.

Masleša says that the revival of the village starts tomorrow. If the machinery had not been engaged, the roads would not be passable until mid-June.

lukomir2The residents of Lukomir have spent this, the fourth consecutive winter, in Tarčin, Hadžići and Vlakovo, since the village is blocked from November until May due to the several meters high snow drifts.

Lukomir is the only village in Bosnia and Herzegovina over 1.300 meters above sea level and the last authentic Bosnian village with houses made of stone and covered with shingles.

On the southern slopes of Bjelašnica and on the edge of the Rakitnica Canyon, for which the environmentalists say is unique in Europe, the nature lovers and mountain climbers, cyclists and motorcyclists visit Lukomir and enjoy the beauty of the landscape, from spring until late autumn.

lukomir4Along with the traditional Bosnian dishes and natural beverages that Mujo and his wife Mina Masleša serve in “The Summer Garden” (“Ljetna Bašta”), and the view of the Rakitnica Canyon which extends to “The Mostar’s Door” and Prenj, and peaks of Visočica, Krvavac and Obalj, as well as the view of the stecaks-tombstones-dating back to the 14th and 15th century, the visit to this unique village certainly is a special adventure.

Lukomir is among the top destinations in all the rural tourism brochures.
