BHANSA Becomes First in Region to Use Drones for CNS Measurements

The Air Navigation Service Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHANSA) has taken another significant step in the modernization and digitalization of aviation infrastructure, becoming the first air navigation service provider in the region to actively introduce unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) into CNS measurements.

With the successful completion of specialized training in the use of the SkyRF® system, advanced drone technology for precise radio frequency measurements, BHANSA has trained a team of experts to conduct these sophisticated analyses in real operational conditions.

“With this step forward, we are strengthening BHANSA’s operational capacities and once again positioning Bosnia and Herzegovina as a regional leader in the application of advanced technologies in air navigation,” emphasized BHANSA Director Davorin Primorac.

The training was held in Mostar and Sarajevo, in cooperation with Intersoft Electronics from Belgium and Skyguide from Switzerland, creators of the SkyRF® system. The program combined theoretical lectures and practical exercises on real equipment, which provided participants with the knowledge necessary to apply the new technology in their daily work.

SkyRF® is a drone platform for measuring radio frequency signals, intended for testing the performance of communication, navigation and surveillance systems from the so-called “far field” zone – outside the immediate vicinity of the equipment. The technology allows for a reduction in the need for classic flight tests by up to 50%, which significantly reduces costs, CO₂ emissions and operational interruptions, while maintaining a high level of accuracy and reliability.

During the training, additional possibilities for applying SkyRF® technology were also discussed – including advanced radar analysis, testing of PAPI and ALS lighting systems, terrain mapping and obstacle identification, which further contributes to air traffic safety and more efficient airspace management.

By introducing SkyRF® technology, BHANSA confirms its strategic orientation towards innovation, digital transformation and more environmentally responsible business.
