The 29th Conference (General Assembly) of the Member States of the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) began its work in The Hague on Monday. The plenary session of the conference will last until November 29.
At the beginning of the session, a ceremony was held during which the Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Netherlands and the Permanent Representative of our country to the OPCW, Almir Šahović, officially assumed the presidency of this large global multilateral gathering, which includes 193 countries.
Ambassador Šahović was elected to the position of Chairman of the OPCW General Assembly upon the proposal of the Group of Eastern and Central European States, for a one-year term (until the next General Assembly, which is scheduled to be held in November 2025).
In his address to the Conference, Šahović thanked for the trust shown, especially in this very delicate geopolitical moment the world is going through. He emphasized that his election represents a great recognition of the active foreign policy and constructive role played by BiH in international relations.
The OPCW General Assembly is one of the largest multilateral gatherings in the world – more than 500 participants, after the UN General Assembly, and represents the largest multilateral gathering ever chaired by our country.
The chairmanship of the OPCW General Assembly represents an exceptional opportunity for additional promotion of BiH on the international stage, as a reliable and constructive partner capable of contributing to resolving even very complex issues on the world stage, the Embassy of BiH in The Hague announced.
