Mirza Selimbegović, a member of the People and Justice Party (NiP), was elected as the Deputy Mayor of the City of Sarajevo. The new Mayor of the City of Sarajevo was not elected at today’s session of the City Council of the City of Sarajevo, and his election was postponed until Friday.

At today’s session, Selimbegović was elected with 19 votes in favor and one vote against, two councilors abstained, while three councilors did not vote. The session was attended by 25 of the 28 city councilors.

Selimbegović succeeded Samir Avdić, also from NiP, as the Deputy Mayor of the City of Sarajevo, who took over the mandate in the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo.

Selimbegović was born in 1985 in Rogatica. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Sarajevo. He has gained many years of work experience and managerial knowledge in both the private and public sectors in various management positions. In the 2012 local elections, he was elected as a councilor of the Novi Grad Municipal Council of Sarajevo, and in 2016 and 2020 he renewed his mandates. During his third term, he was elected as the Chairman of the Novi Grad Municipal Council. He held the position of Secretary General of the political organization Narod i Pravda for more than three years during its founding period until his appointment to the position of Chairman of the Municipal Council.

According to councilor Dragan Stevanović (SDP), his party will propose a future mayor, and he requested that a discussion on this issue be held on Friday, when the SDP will also have an official proposal for this position.

“Given that the candidate we need to propose is not ready, we think that this agenda item should be adopted urgently, that it should be on the agenda, and when the discussion on this item comes up, we will propose that the session be continued on Friday,” said Stevanović.

The term of office of the current mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, has ended.
