BiH Citizens again requests the Closure of the Uborak Landfill

Activists of the Citizens’ Initiative “Jer nas se tiče” organized a protest walk on Saturday morning under the slogan “Steps for a waste-free tomorrow” in order to once again draw attention to the problem of the Uborak municipal waste disposal site in Mostar.

Activists reiterated the key demands addressed to the authorities of the City of Mostar, namely: the closure of the Uborak landfill, then the comprehensive rehabilitation of the landfill with the aim of mitigating the negative consequences for the environment and the local community, and the determination of a new location that complies with modern environmental standards.

“Complying with these demands would mean the final commitment of the City of Mostar to the protection of its citizens and the cessation of the oppression of Initiative activists and the suppression of their struggle,” the activists said.

“We who live in the immediate vicinity of the Uborak landfill are witnesses of its harmful effects on our environment, health and overall quality of life. We raise our voice against the long-term ignoring of the burning problem of the City of Mostar and we believe that the citizens of Mostar deserve better,” said Edhem Čustović, representative of the Initiative.

The citizens’ initiative “Because it concerns us” calls on the authorities of the City of Mostar to take concrete steps in solving the problem of the Uborak landfill. Today’s protest walk is a collective plea for a better tomorrow, where the well-being of all residents comes first, according to the press release.

Activists and residents of the surrounding settlements have been demanding the closure and rehabilitation of the “Uborak-Buđevci” regional municipal waste disposal site, located north of Mostar, for years.

The city government, led by Mayor Mario Kordić, has repeatedly expressed its commitment to solving this problem, but they emphasize that it is a long-term and expensive process that requires the involvement of various higher authorities in its solution, Fena reports.
