In 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina exported 71.7 million kilograms of milk and dairy products, which is more than 22 million kilograms above its imports.
However, the country paid 253.2 million BAM for 49.3 million kilograms of imported products, while exports brought in 144.6 million BAM. On average, a kilogram of imported products was more than two and a half times more expensive than exported ones.
These figures are part of the Market Analysis for Milk and Dairy Products in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2025, prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, which the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted today.
The trade deficit in this sector still exists, but it is reduced by 11 per cent. Import coverage by exports stands at 57.1 per cent. Compared to the previous year, imports have decreased by 24 per cent in quantity and 5 per cent in value. The quantity of exports decreased by six per cent; its value stood at the same level as in 2024.
Last year, total raw milk production amounted to 619.7 million liters, representing a 2 per cent growth. Cow’s milk accounts for 97 per cent of production, while sheep’s and goat’s milk are significantly less represented. The production of sheep’s milk has decreased.
A total of 299.82 million liters of cow’s milk was purchased, which is seven times more than the previous year. The purchase price increased by 13 per cent compared to 2024.
The dairy industry produced 260 thousand tons of dairy products, achieving a three per cent growth. Consumable milk remains the most important product, while cream, whey, fermented products, and cheese also recorded an increase. Butter recorded the highest growth at 33 per cent.
As stated in the analysis, the sector records moderate production growth, but it still suffers from pronounced structural weaknesses. Among them are low purchase levels, extensive production, and insufficient market integration, which limit long-term development and competitiveness, Klix.ba writes.
