Bosnia and Herzegovina is experiencing one of the biggest population declines in Europe in the last 30 years. According to the latest Eurostat data, from 1993 to 2023, the population of BiH decreased by 19 percent.

These data point to long-term demographic challenges facing our country, including emigration and declining birth rates.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with most of the countries in the region, belongs to the group of countries with negative demographic trends. For example, Croatia recorded a drop of 16 percent, Serbia 14 percent, while Albania recorded a drop of 15 percent.

Speaking of the countries of the region, the increase in population was recorded by Slovenia by 6 percent and Montenegro by one percent.

Some Eastern European countries are recording a drastic loss of population, such as Lithuania (-22 percent) and Bulgaria (-24 percent). The largest population loss was recorded in Ukraine (-29 percent).

On the other hand, the highest growth in Europe was recorded by Turkey (+49 percent) and Ireland (+47 percent), Fena news agency writes.
