Bosnia and Herzegovina is One Step closer to Dual Citizenship

The House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted today an initiative that should represent an introduction to the facilitation of dual citizenship procedures between BiH and Germany.

Namely, on the initiative of Denis Zvizdić, the House of Representatives adopted an initiative that initiates the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina to initiate the procedure of concluding the Agreement on Dual Citizenship between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Germany.

“Good news for our diaspora and the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina! An initiative was just adopted at the state parliament, by which I asked the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina to start the procedure for concluding an agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Germany, so that tens of thousands of our citizens could return or keep BH citizenship,” said Zvizdić.

Otherwise, in the explanation of the initiative, it is emphasized that, bearing in mind that the new Law on Citizenship of the Federal Republic of Germany has entered into force, which now enables the acquisition of a German passport and the possession of dual citizenship, it is necessary to proceed with the conclusion of the Agreement on Dual Citizenship between BiH and Germany.

“In the case of the conclusion of the bilateral agreement in question, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina would be on an equal footing with the others, who until now had to renounce BiH citizenship, because the legislation of the Federal Republic of Germany did not allow dual citizenship until now. This prevented more than 30,000 former citizens from of Bosnia and Herzegovina to return the citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina, thereby directly discriminating against them,” it was explained, Klix.ba writes.
