Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Madrid Danka Savić met today with the President of the Congress of Deputies of the Kingdom of Spain Meritxell Batet Lamaña, with whom she discussed the next steps to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Kingdom of Spain and the possibilities of organizing a joint inter-parliamentary forum.

As Savić told FENA, she thanked her for the support that Spain provided to BiH in obtaining candidate status for EU membership, and said that the parliamentary experience that Spain gained in the EU accession process would be significant for BiH as well.

– I informed her that a state government has been formed in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that we have a big job ahead of us to fulfill the conditions for progress towards EU membership and the adoption of laws that are necessary in that process. Parliaments play an important role in the integration process, and that experience is significant for us. In the coming period, we should also strengthen parliamentary cooperation – says Savić.

The President of the Spanish Congress, Lamaña, explained that EU membership has brought great improvement to her country and that, based on their experience, they want to support BiH’s progress on the European path.

– Last year we marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations between the two countries, and in 2022 we had visits at the highest levels: at the beginning of last year, Željko Komšić was in Madrid as the chairman of the BiH Presidency, last summer the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited Sarajevo where he spoke with members of the BiH Presidency, and Mostar where he paid tribute to the Spanish soldiers who died in the war in BiH – said Savić.

The Spanish Parliament, the Cortes Generales, consists of two chambers: the Congress and the Senate. The Congress consists of a minimum of 300 and a maximum of 400 representatives who are elected by universal, equal, direct and secret ballot and has much more power than the Senate.
