Bosnia and Herzegovina will be suspended by the end of this year from the work of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for failing to appoint new representatives in that body within six months after the general elections held, BiH’s representative in Council of Europe said.

“By the end of this year, BiH will not be able to participate in the work of the Council of Europe. This means that BiH will not participate in making one of the most important decisions that will be made this year, namely the appointment of a new Secretary General of the Council of Europe,” said Head of Council of Europe Office in BiH, Ambassador Drahoslav Stefanek to Al Jazeera.

He said that BiH representatives will neither participate in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly of the oldest European organization during the three sessions, nor in the committees.

According to the Council of Europe’s Rules, member states must nominate new members of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly no later than six months from the day of the election.

The Council of Europe is an international organisation whose stated aim is to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe.  Founded in 1949, it has 47 member states, covers approximately 820 million people and operates with an annual budget of approximately 500 million euros.
