Two Hundred Children of Migrants attend regular Classes in Bihac

About 200 children on the move, who are staying in the Una-Sana Canton (USC) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) during the migrant wave, have been given the opportunity to attend classes at some educational institutions in that canton.

These are children who are placed in camps in the canton and who stay there for some time. Several primary and secondary schools work with migrant children and try to make it easier for them to live outside their home country.

Almin Hopovac, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of USC, explained in an interview that about 200 childrenof migrants, who are accommodated in some camps in the USC, attend regular classes in some educational institutions.

“We have been hit by a problem, a regional or global migration problem that has particularly affected the USC. At this time, we need to show a form of humanity and tolerance, especially towards children affected by migration,” Hopovac pointed out.

As the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, in cooperation with the NGOs “Save the Children” and UNICEF and several primary and secondary schools in the canton, they enabled children on the move to attend regular classes in the area of USC.

“These are four primary schools in the Bihac area and one secondary school. For about 200 children on the move, we have enabled them to be integrated into the regular educational process. We have one example of a student who completed a primary school exam and enrolled in secondary school,” said Hopovac.

These are children from the camps, mostly from the Reception Center “Borici”.

“The preparatory class mostly consists of children from third to sixth grade. We are never sure how old the children are, no matter what they say. Six or seven students already attend regular classes. They speak Bosnian relatively well, knowledge of the material is also relatively well. Some things that I can’tkeep up with our children we adapt to them. I must say that these are very intelligent children who adopt the material very quickly. They may have a specific way of calculating, but again they get the correct final result,” told Midzic.
