The Geographic Information System (GIS), the database on natural resources, will be handed over today and tomorrow for use to the municipalities of Bijeljina, Zvornik and Bratunac. GIS is a system for managing spatial data, and the geographic information system technology can, among other things, be used for scientific research, asset management, development planning and mapping.
GIS databases were made in the first phase of the project ‘wise use of natural resources’, which includes an analysis of the current situation and the use of natural resources made during the last year.
For this project of cross-border cooperation with Serbia, which will last until November of this year, around 500.000 BAM from the EU IPA Fund will be used.
We recall that last year the EU suspended 17,7 million Euros from the IPA Fund for B&H. Local politicians did not agree on a mechanism of coordination, which was a precondition for further use of grant funds intended for various purposes beneficial to all citizens of this country.
In the last 20 years, the EU allocated over 3 billion Euros for various forms of assistance to B&H. From that amount, around 600 million Euros were allocated through grants for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA). To continue to receive this much-needed assistance from the EU, politicians in this country must get serious and show a willingness to cooperate and reform.
