Bogić Bogićević underwent emergency surgery at the General Hospital “Prim. dr. Abdulah Nakaš” in Sarajevo. He is currently in the intensive care unit.
What is officially known for now is that Bogić Bogićević fell in his house and injured his hip. As confirmed to Federal Television, he was operated on by the director of the General Hospital, Dr. Ismet Gavrankapetanović.
Bogićević’s close friend Nijaz Skenderagić, speaking to Federal Television, conveyed a message from his family and friends, emphasizing the need for the public to calm down.
“What I have been asked to do, both by my family and friends, is to say that at this moment Bogić needs, above all, peace and a wish for a speedy recovery, and the least dramatic and sensational news that could be read on certain portals in the past few hours,” said Skenderagić.
Bogić Bogićević left a deep mark on the political history of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region. He was a member of the Presidency of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1989 to 1991.
During that term, he made one of the key decisions – in March 1991, he voted against the declaration of a state of emergency, which prevented the Yugoslav People’s Army from taking full control of the country.
After that, in the fall of 1991, he retired from the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then served as a delegate in the Parliament of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. After that, he also served as the director of the Olympic Committee. He retired from active political life until 2021, when he was nominated for mayor of Sarajevo, but withdrew from the candidacy.
He remained recognized in the public as a politician who made decisions without political pressure, guided by his own conscience.
