Bosnian shepherd dog Tornjak is probably the only breed in the world that has its own anthem. Alen Salkic and Mile Filipovic in cooperation with well-known artist from Travnik Rusmir Agacevic – Rus were able to find the funds for the construction of the monument to Tornjak and set it near the former “Bagata”, almost in the center of Travnik. Anthem to Tornjak is spinning around the world and not only between our immigrants.
We wanted to get him closer to the world as an exceptional guardian and not only shepherd flocks. To get him closer to children and people. I was in the office of Mayor of Travnik, Mr. Tahir Lendo when he received a call from a bank that he has to return about 70 000 BAM that are lying on the bank account, and they should be spent in a project. It was actually a donation of the bank. I suggested that we spend the money to make a monument to Tornjak. We hired a local artist Marko Gida and here’s our Tornjak now, proudly sitting in the middle of the city made of marble,” said Alen Salkic.
“Tornjak proved to be very noble and good-natured dog, but also very combative. On one occasion we had an encounter with a wild boar, who was most likely lost and went through my flock. My Tornjak attacked the boar although he was only 16 months old. The boar wounded him but he still manage to scare him away from the sheep,” said famous breeder of Tornjaks Halil Sefer.
Slobodan Licanin, cynologist judge in the Cynological Club Travnik, said:
“We must not forget that the first written standard for Tornjaks was made in Travnik on the 10th of May 1990. by the cynological judges Stjepan Krasic, Ante Kozina and Hrvoje Petkovic.”
