The death toll from floods and landslides caused by monsoon rains in Nepal has risen to 148, officials reported on Sunday. At least 55 people are still missing. The heavy rains that began late Thursday have affected most of the country, with particularly intense downpours in the eastern and central regions.
Nepalese police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki stated that at least 101 people have been injured across the country since Friday.
“The search for the missing continues, and affected families are being relocated to safety. This process is expected to take several more days,” Karki said.
Search teams have recovered at least 35 bodies from buses buried under landslides in the Kathmandu area since Saturday evening. Nepalese police announced that a total of 3.661 people have been evacuated. More than half of the victims are from the capital Kathmandu and surrounding districts.
Local media describe the rainfall as the heaviest in several decades. The downpours have severely damaged infrastructure, including roads and bridges. The government has decided to close all schools for three days, N1 writes.
