Canada imposes a 100 Percent Tariff on Imports of Chinese Electric Vehicles

The Canadian government has announced that, following the example of the United States (U.S.), it will impose a 100 percent tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles.

Ottawa also announced a 25 percent tariff on imports of steel and aluminum from China.

The new tariffs will be implemented starting October 1st of this year.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that the Canadian government must act to counter what he described as China’s policy of supporting the production of enormous capacities.

He did not specify whether the tariffs would be softened or would remain the same for vehicles from Tesla, whose shares fell by more than three percent following the government’s announcement.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of Canada working in alignment with other economies around the world.

Ottawa is also considering punitive measures such as tariffs on chips and solar cells, Trudeau said, without providing any details.
