Multiple people have been killed and several others injured in Vancouver after a driver plowed his car into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in the western Canadian city, police said Saturday.

The driver has been taken into custody, police said in a social media post.

The incident occurred as members of the Filipino community gathered to celebrate Lapu Lapua Day, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim wrote on social media.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapua Day,” he said.

The festival honors the leader of the 16th-century anti-colonial struggle in the Philippines.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected and the Filipino community of Vancouver during this incredibly difficult time,” the mayor wrote.

Police said the incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday.
