Case of Bosniak Children from Konjević Polje Will Go Before UN

Konjevic-polje-djecaNedim Ademović, legal representative of the Bosniak parents from Konjević Polje, said at a press conference yesterday that the entire situation of disenfranchised Bosniak children will go in front of the Special Representative of the UN on the issue of education.

‘’We have gathered today symbolically, because the tent has been removed. We launched two procedures, after which we negotiated with the RS authorities and international community, which lent us the necessary support. One procedure was launched against the elementary school “Petar Kočić” in Konjević Polje, and the other against the RS Ministry for Education and Culture before the basic court in Banja Luka’’, he said.

He pointed out that the case is likely to be transferred to the Constitutional Court, and in case of a poor response, they will seek help from the European Court for Human Rights.

‘’Together with complaints related to systematic discrimination in education in the RS, we asked for the adoption of interim measures, but the RS authorities and courts are silent and no one is reacting to our problem. This is why we will launch proceedings before the Constitutional Court, perhaps still the only independent and impartial tribunal in B&H. If there is no reaction, I think that the door will slowly open to bring this issue before the European Court of Human Rights, which is the most competent body to deal with this issue’’, said Ademović, and also announced that they will start a process in the UN.

‘’I am announcing that we will launch soon proceedings before the Special Rapporteur for the right to education in the UN, and this will be started in the next seven days’’, he said.

Muhizin Omerović, representative of the parents from Konjević Polje, said that the problem has still not been solved. ‘’The solution lies with the RS Minister of Education and Culture and this can be solved at any moment if he signs a document that he has with himself. In this document, we are clearly asking to have our requirements met, and they are based on the national curricula and school board’’, he said.

He pointed out the temporary solution, where children are taking classes in a makeshift school area in Nova Kasaba, near Konjević Polje, so that they will not fail the school year. He also said that in June, the children would take their exam in the elementary school “Vladislav Skarić” in Sarajevo.
