Cat Mirza Becomes a Beloved Symbol of a Sarajevo School: Cared for by All, Even Honored with a Song

At the Sarajevo Elementary School “Sejh Muhamed ef. Hadzijamakovic,” the cat Mirza has found a home and shelter. Students, teachers, and school staff have been taking care of him for five years, since the day he was brought in by the cleaner, Aunt Sabiha.

“I decided to bring him in front of the school because there are always children there, and he will never be hungry,” Aunt Sabiha said.

The students are delighted, and Mirza has his own little house and a special place to eat.

“Mirza is an exceptionally special cat, and we all take care of him and love him, and he loves us too. We can prove that because every long break he is with the children and plays,” said a student.

The biology and English teachers bought him a little house and take him to the veterinarian regularly.

Mirza has become a symbol of the school, and he even got a song written by the Bosnian language teacher.

“They did not turn a blind eye to an innocent being, but gave him warmth, comfort, security, and a home,” said teacher Kerim Fejzagic, the author of the song about the cat Mirza.

The principal, Emina Hrnjic, approved this step, saying that animals bring benefits to children’s development, while older students said that Mirza will especially help first-graders.
