China angered by Blinken’s Statements after the Elections in Taiwan

China has accused the United States of America (U.S.) of sending the wrong signal to those advocating Taiwan’sindependence.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected president of Taiwan after the election results were announced.

Beijing called the message a violation of Washington’s commitment to maintain only unofficial ties with Taiwan.

“We look forward to working with the newly elected president and Taiwanese leaders of all parties to advance our common interests and values,” Blinken said.

He also stressed that the U.S., one of Taiwan’s biggest allies, is “committed to maintaining peace and stability”.

Blinken’s remarks drew sharp criticism from Beijing, which sees any declaration of support for Taiwan as giving legitimacy to the candidate and a political party it sees as a separatist group hoping to turn Taiwan into an independent sovereign nation.

China’s foreign ministry issued a statement saying Blinken’s congratulatory message violated the U.S. pledge to maintain “only cultural, commercial and other unofficial relations” with Taiwan.

“China firmly opposes the U.S. having any form of official interaction with Taiwan and interfering in Taiwan’s affairs in any way or under any pretext,” they said, Klix.ba writes.
