European Union (EU) High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell said he was seriously concerned about the escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran and warned that they had brought the world to the brink of war.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of G7 foreign ministers, Borrell warned that the current course of events could lead to an all-out regional conflict with far-reaching consequences.

“I don’t want to exaggerate, but we are on the verge of a war, a regional war in the Middle East, which will cause shocks in the rest of the world, especially in Europe. So stop it,” said Borrell.

He also reiterated the EU’s commitment to imposing additional sanctions on Iran in response to Tehran’s recent moves.

However, he also sent an emphatic message to Israel, calling for restraint and warning against any actions that could further worsen the situation, AA writes.
