On Thursday, China urged Israel to stop building illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and to implement the United Nations (UN) resolution for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, state media reported.
Speaking to reporters in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that countries should take a responsible stance and concrete actions to promote the implementation of UN resolutions.
“All parties, especially Israel, should seriously implement relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly, immediately cease military operations in Gaza, and halt illegal settlement activities in the West Bank,” Lin Jian said.
The UN General Assembly passed a significant resolution on Wednesday calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories within a year.
The resolution, proposed by Palestine, was adopted with broad consensus, with 124 member states voting in favor, 14 against, and 43 abstaining.
The resolution demands Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, as outlined in the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from July 2024.
In defiance of the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international condemnation amidst its ongoing brutal offensive in the Gaza Strip following the Palestinian group Hamas’ attack on October 7th, 2023.
Since then, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed more than 41.200 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
Israel has been accused of genocide at the ICJ.
