A citizens’ initiative was officially submitted to the Municipal Council and the mayor of Kupres, requesting the adoption of a resolution opposing the implementation of the magnesium production project in the Kupres area, as well as the termination of the concession agreement for the Grguljaca quarry.

The initiative was jointly submitted by the informal group of citizens “Youth for Kupres,” the association “Attivo” Kupres, and the Mountaineering and Ecological Association “Stozer” Kupres, and it was supported by 1.093 registered voters listed in the electoral roll of the Municipality of Kupres.

According to statements from the group “Youth for Kupres,” an additional 3.215 people gave their support to the initiative – among them people of Kupres origin, property owners, tourists, mountaineers, and friends of Kupres, making a total of 4.308 people.

The citizens’ initiative is based on several reasons, including the negative impact of heavy industry on the health of residents and the environment, the inconsistency of the planned project with the valid spatial plans and strategies for sustainable tourism development, as well as the potential threat to the drinking water supply from the Basinac spring. Doubts were also expressed about the legality and benefits of the existing concession for the Grguljaca quarry.

The initiators state that the interest of the citizens has been clearly expressed, and they expect the Municipal Council of Kupres to consider the initiative within the legal deadline and make a decision that will reflect the will of the community.
