CNN: Trump should visit BiH

US president Donald Trump condemned the neo-Nazi movement in the U.S.A., but he stood in the defense of the right-wing movement in that country. That brought about uneasiness for many Europeans, who know what it means to be occupied by a Fascist regime, according to Frida Ghitis, a CNN correspondent.

“Trump is trying to morally equate racists and people that are fighting against them,” Ghitis wrote.

She called on the American president to visit BiH and the Memorial Center in Potocari.

“Trump in his European tour should visit BiH. If he goes to Srebrenica, he will then see what happens when we don’t fight against ethnic extremism,” noted Ghitis.

She remembered her friend from BiH Haris Hurem, a translator for CNN in BiH during 1995.

“His friends and neighbors in Sarajevo never considered who was a Muslim and who was a Bosnian Serb. But, nationalism and extremism exploded in that country, while charismatic politicians added fuel to the fire. One day, Haris was playing cards with his neighbors in Sarajevo, when the police came and arrested them because they were Muslim. Haris never stepped into a mosque, but was taken to a concentration camp. A multiethnic society started faltering,” explained Ghitis.

The situation in BiH and Nazi Germany are different than those in the US today, noted Ghitis and added that she doesn’t serious expect civil war in the US.

“But I do think that Trump isn’t aware how dangerous his behavior is. If he does know what he’s doing, then the problem is much larger than what we think, while this moment in history is very dangerous,” Ghitis concluded.
