Covic comments after the EPP removes Term “legitimate Representation” in BiH Resolution

The text of the resolution on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European perspective at the EPP congress in Rotterdam recognizes a key historical moment and the challenges facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, said HDZ BiH President Dragan Covic, who is attending the European People’s Congress.

The EPP called for urgent reform of electoral legislation in line with international judgments and decisions of the BiH Constitutional Court, including the equality of the three constituent peoples, as a necessary precondition for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s political stability and European future.

The EPP, Covic adds, remains a reliable partner of the HDZ BiH.

At yesterday‘s Congress, the term “legitimate representation” was removed from the text of the draft resolution on Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) of the European People’s Party (EPP), which was the HDZ’s proposal.

”In accordance with the decision of the Constitutional Court of BiH from 2016, the EPP believes that political stability begins with legitimate political representation, as a precondition to be ensured at all political and administrative levels, so that constituent people and all other citizens are not deprived democratic right to elect their representatives,” the EPP noted.

Transformation of BiH

In the final version, agreed upon by a special congressional committee on resolutions, it was removed.

”In the context of the drastically deteriorating security environment in Europe determined by the unprecedented aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the European Union (EU) must prevent possible new negative scenarios and make efforts to direct Southeast Europe towards accelerated acceptance of fundamental European values.

As concluded in the urgent resolution of the EPP at the EPP Congress in Zagreb in 2019, the Western Balkans remains a region of strategic importance for the EU, given that the stability, economic and social development of the region has direct consequences for the EU.

Potential risk to stability in BiH

We strongly condemn the latest unacceptable incitement, which calls into question the country’s territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty. Any unconstitutional secessionist actions, which go beyond the constitutional and legal framework, must end, while the current blockade of institutions must be stopped immediately to allow BiH to address the necessary reforms and continue to pursue its EU perspective.

The EPP supports political dialogue, which must be given priority over blocking important political processes and reforms, thus prolonging the political crisis that poses a potential risk to democracy, stability, and the rule of law in BiH.

The EPP calls on all political leaders and institutions in BiH to give their constructive contribution to ensure fair elections and to involve all sister parties of the EPP in this process,” it was mentioned in the resolution, Avaz writes.
