The Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PSBiH), Dragan Čović, held a working meeting in Sarajevo today with the European Union Special Representative and Ambassador of the European Union to BiH, Luigi Sorec, according to the Public Relations Department of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, citing a statement from Čović’s office.
The meeting focused on exchanging views on the functioning of the authorities at the BiH level, as well as on the necessary steps to achieve new momentum on the European path, the state of political dialogue, and other key issues such as amendments to electoral legislation.
Čović stressed the importance of establishing a functional political dialogue that will, through agreements between legitimate representatives, result in an accelerated legislative process and the implementation of key reforms.
He stressed that it is crucial to preserve peace, security and territorial integrity of BiH, but also to achieve the necessary progress in terms of amendments to the Election Law, which will ensure unhindered respect for the constitutional framework of BiH, and the democratic will of the Croats as a constituent people, with an emphasis on institutions intended for the protection of collective rights.
He said that he expects the adoption of key laws – the Law on the HJPC and the Law on the Court of BiH – at the upcoming session of the House of Peoples of the BiH PA, which will be scheduled for May 29. The adoption of these laws, as well as the appointment of the Chief Negotiator and the fulfillment of the conditions for the Growth Plan, is a priority that, as he emphasized, will significantly contribute to the establishment of internal stability and the continuation of EU integration as the most important foreign policy priority.
Soreca reiterated the European Union’s firm commitment to support Bosnia and Herzegovina in achieving the necessary progress, emphasizing that the fulfillment of key conditions and the implementation of reforms are the basis for opening accession negotiations. He emphasized the expectation for the adoption of European laws in the House of Peoples by the end of May, saying that institutional stability and the rule of law must be priorities for all political actors.
The interlocutors agreed that the European perspective of BiH is a common goal that requires urgent overcoming of blockades and obstacles, as well as strengthening of dialogue and responsible and decisive action of all levels of government in the country.
