Croatia’s Accession in EU Poses Challenge for BiH Border Police

BiH Border Police (GP) sees Croatia’s accession to EU as an incentive to enhance mutual cooperation in border checks and border surveillance in accordance with best practices and recommendations of the EU, said the Director of GBBiH Vinko Dumančić.

According to him, border security, and people who cross these borders, is a common goal, and BiH and Croatia strive to create mutual cooperation and coordination of activities.

BiH has the longest border with Croatia of 987 kilometers, with 30 international borders and 25 crossings for border traffic. Therefore, a high level of cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) of Croatia is necessary.

Dumančić explained that in talks is the drafting of a new agreement on border traffic that will comply with EU standards.

At the same time, there will be a relocation of mutual locations at two border crossings in Neum at a newly built crossing with improved working conditions.

Croatia’s accession, scheduled for mid-2013, represents for GP BiH an added challenge because it will become both a common and external border of the EU.

‘’With this, we will have to constantly improve border checks, border surveillance and infrastructure at border controls in accordance with EU standards. It will be necessary to support all relevant institutions in BiH”, said Dumančić, among other things.
