Damir Beljo: Why I stopped whistling on the Anthem of B&H

beljo2Boxer Damir Beljo managed to do what many have not. Although it was happening before that the fans whistle at the anthem of B&H, only Beljo managed to stop them.

To recall, in the hall Pecara in Siroki Brijeg, Beljo fought for the title of European Champion. Before the fight in Pecara, the fans tried to whistle at the anthem of B&H. However, boxer from Mostar managed to stop this attempt.

“Those whistles were not intended for B&H. They also love this country and it is their country. They are maybe not satisfied with the status of Croats in B&H,” said Beljo, the European champion in cruiserweight by the WBO version.

“I think that B&H is my country as it is for any person from Sarajevo, Zenica and Siroki Brijeg. Those whistles of the fans from Siroki Brijeg were not intended for B&H. They also love this country and it is their country. They are maybe not satisfied with the status of Croats in B&H. However, I am not the right person to talk about it because, honestly, I’m not familiar with these things enough. I do not do politics and I do not want to get involved in politics,” said Beljo.

Beljo emphasized that he wants to separate sports from politics. It affected him a lot when he read the comments saying that he betrayed his people.

“I cannot hate anyone because I am not raised that way. I do not want to generalize people. I am proudly carrying the flag of B&H because I was born here.”
