On September 15, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Josip Brkić participated in the regular session of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is held from September 14 to 18 in Vienna.
In his speech, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Josip Brkić, emphasized Bosnia and Herzegovina’s commitment to the fundamental goals and principles of the IAEA. He also emphasized the commitment to continuous strengthening of the legislative, regulatory and institutional framework for radiological and nuclear safety, as well as efficient implementation of the regulatory framework, strengthening of regulatory supervision and further development of sustainable infrastructure for radiation protection.
Deputy Brkić stated that in 2026, Bosnia and Herzegovina entered a new phase of cooperation with the IAEA through the national technical cooperation project (BOH9017) entitled “Support for the management and conditioning of abandoned sealed radioactive sources”, with the aim of strengthening domestic capacities for inventory control, conditioning and safe management of abandoned sources. He emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina extremely appreciates this international support, which significantly contributes to the development of sustainable state capacities and strong protection of people and the environment from radiological risks.
Deputy Brkić stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina attaches special importance to the contribution of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Program to the strengthening of domestic capacities in the field of human health and radiation protection. Cooperation with the Agency significantly supported health institutions throughout the country in the fields of nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging and medical physics. This includes optimization of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, improvement of quality assurance and radiation protection, and further strengthening of professional capacities.
BiH continues to support international efforts to strengthen nuclear security, prevent illegal trade in nuclear and other radioactive materials, and promote universal access and efficient implementation of relevant conventions and protocol obligations.
At the end of the presentation, he pointed out that Bosnia and Herzegovina remains a reliable, responsible and committed partner to the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the belief that through solidarity, mutual respect and close cooperation, it will continue to successfully solve global challenges and ensure that the benefits of nuclear science and technology serve exclusively the well-being of humanity and sustainable development.
