Did Israel Attempt to Assassinate Iran’s Foreign Minister?

Iranian intelligence services have reportedly foiled a major Israeli plot to assassinate Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran, according to an Iranian government adviser.

Mohammad Hossein Rangbaran, a senior official and advisor to the Foreign Ministry, confirmed that the plot was foiled thanks to what he called “precise security measures.”

Describing the attempt as a “major conspiracy,” Rangbaran credited Iran’s intelligence community, whom he called “our unknown soldiers,” for preventing what could have been a serious act of aggression in recent days.

The information comes as Araghchi prepares to participate in key talks in Geneva with the European troika — Germany, France and the United Kingdom — amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel.
In a post on X Network, Rangbaran directly linked the assassination attempt to Araghchi’s diplomatic engagement, implying that the Israeli regime was seeking to undermine Iran’s position through covert use of violence.

Rangbaran stressed that the threat was “real and serious,” reflecting the high stakes of the current regional crisis, as well as the symbolic significance of Araghchi’s diplomatic role.

In his address, Rangbaran portrayed Araghchi not only as an experienced diplomat but also as a dedicated servant of the Islamic Republic. He stressed that the foreign minister “does not see himself only as a diplomat, but as a soldier in the service of the homeland.”

Drawing a symbolic parallel with slain Quds Force commander General Qassem Soleimani, Rangbaran said that Araghchi “seeks martyrdom on the same path.” He concluded by calling on Iranians to support Araghchi and his colleagues in their efforts to defend Iran’s sovereignty and rights on the global stage.

The revelation comes after heightened security measures for senior Iranian officials, as Tehran warns of intensified Israeli intelligence operations targeting leading figures and key institutions. Araghchi, a former nuclear negotiator with extensive experience in Western diplomacy, has emerged as a central voice in Iran’s response to joint pressure from Washington and Tel Aviv.
