Dodik proposes naming a Square in Banja Luka after a War Crimes Indictee

SNSD leader Milorad Dodik proposed today that the square in Banja Luka, where there is a central monument to fallen members of the Army of Republika Srpska, be named after the war crimes indictee from The Hague, Momir Talić.

Dodik made this proposal after marking the 23rd anniversary of the death of Colonel General Momir Talić, commander of the First Krajina Corps and Chief of the General Staff of the Army of the Republika Srpska.

“I am asking the mayor and councilors in the city assembly to do this as soon as possible. Talić is a national icon and nobody can change anything, but the myth about him as a man who was a fighter for the freedom of the Serbian people can only be strengthened. Talić was part of the tandem that kept Krajina untouched and free,” said Dodik.
Momir Talić died on temporary release before the end of the trial for crimes in Krajina. Talić was one of those who informed war criminal Ratko Mladić, sentenced to life in detail, about the crimes in Krajina.

The Hague Court issued a secret indictment against General Talić on March 12, 1999 for war crimes committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was arrested by the Austrian authorities on August 25, 1999, while, as Chief of the Main Staff of the Army of the RS, he was in Vienna at the OSCE seminar.

Due to his impaired health, he was released to defend himself and died at the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade on May 28, 2003.

The action “Corridor 1992” was carried out under Talić’s leadership.

Operation Corridor is the code name for the military operation of Serbian forces in the summer of 1992 in Bosanska Posavina. The goal of the operation was to establish a connection between the western and eastern parts controlled by the VRS, more precisely the connection of the territory, then still Yugoslavia, with Banja Luka.

In addition to murders and injuries, the fall of Posavina was also marked by large-scale looting and burning of the conquered territory. After Operation Corridor, the forces of Greater Serbia killed 458 Croatian civilians, mostly elderly people. No one was held accountable for those crimes.
Two years ago, SNSD nominated Momir Talić for the City of Banja Luka award, Klix.ba writes.
