Dogs Trust prevented the Birth of Hundreds of Thousands of Stray Dogs

Stray Dogs kurir.rsThe last in the series of campaigns of free owned dogs sterilization of the Dogs Trust which lasted from June 29th until July 31st 2015 resulted in sterilization of 474 dogs.

Thereby the total number of dogs that have been sterilized with the support of the Dogs Trust Foundation in the Sarajevo Canton increased to 13.120, of which 3.807 are owned dogs and 9.313 are stray dogs.

Given that one female dog can give birth to about 18 puppies annually and that her offspring is reproductively mature already at six months of age, the sterilization of 4.856 female stray dogs prevented the birth and living in cruel conditions of hundreds of thousands of new dogs,  as well as the increasing of the stray dogs problem in the community. In addition, the owned dogs that have been sterilized with the support of the Foundation are no longer under the risk of unwanted offspring, they are healthier and were given an opportunity to live a longer and better life with their owners, bringing them joy and loyalty, as only dogs can.

“The Representative Office of the Foundation Dogs Trust in B&H continues its significant support and is ready to deepen it through the partnership with local authorities, all with the aim to help the consistent and complete implementation of the Law on the Protection and Welfare of Animals in B&H, and to establish a solid, sustainable and humane system for managing the population of dogs in the Sarajevo Canton. By this, the Sarajevo Canton would become an example for replication for the entire country”, said Anel Becirovic, the head of the representative office. He added that the Dogs Trust believes that, in order to have dogs that live as pets and not on the street, we have to continue acting on the symptoms, but also that it is absolutely crucial to simultaneously act directly on the cause of the problem, and that is irresponsible ownership and unregistered dog breeding.

“We hope that the partnership with the authorities will enable us to transfer our database to the responsible institution which the Government appoints and which can use it to establish a Dogs’ Register and penalize the irresponsible owners”, said Becirovic.
