americansRepresentatives of the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of BiH presented the project “Preventive conservation of collections of the National Museum of BiH” today in Sarajevo. The Special Fund of US Ambassadors for the preservation of cultural heritage donated the funds for this project in the amount of one million and 70,000 BAM.

Commission is the implementer of the project, and its main goal is to support the reconstruction of National Museum of BiH through restoration and preventive conservation in order to prevent, stop or slow down the deterioration of the museum collection by introducing high standards of protection and creation of optimal conditions for its preservation. Activities will be implemented in phases during 3 years.

The Head of the Office of Public Affairs of the US Embassy in BiH, Stefanie Altman-Winans, emphasized at the presentation of the project at the National Museum of BiH that the preservation of monuments is very important for the preservation of cultural history in the entire BiH, and that in this context the support of the US Embassy to the work of the Commission is constant during the past 10 years.

She emphasized support of the Embassy in the reconstruction of many cultural and historical monuments in BiH, such as the building of Red Cross in Sarajevo, the Catholic and the Orthodox Church in Blagaj, the Historical Museum of BiH and the Jewish cemetery in Sarajevo.

Assistant Executive Officer for Heritage of the Commission, Mirela Mulalic-Handan, added that the funds were received from the Great program of mentioned American Fund, for which is possible to submit projects in certain countries, and that BiH used the chance for the importance of National Museum of BiH to be recognized as a World Heritage.

She believes that this museum, as building of exceptional architectural design constructed in the neo-Renaissance style, and its fundus are testimony of our memory and heritage of all peoples on the territory of BiH.

She specified that the project will be implemented by 2018, and each year will be realized one phase. So after the preparatory year of 2015, this year is planned restoration of the roof on the building of the Department of archeology and natural sciences, as well as the restoration of the concrete balustrade railing of the complex.
