Egypt is considering downgrading diplomatic Ties with Israel

Egyptian officials reportedly told the Wall Street Journal that Cairo is considering downgrading, but not ending, its diplomatic ties with Israel amid deepening divisions over the Gaza war.

According to the report, officials say the withdrawal of Egypt’s ambassador from Tel Aviv is a move being considered.

“As we stand now, there are no plans to cut ties or abandon Camp David,” another Egyptian official told the newspaper, referring to the United States (U.S.)-backed agreements that led to the 1979 peace agreement between the countries.

“But as long as Israeli forces remain at the Rafah crossing, Egypt will not send any trucks to Rafah,” said the same source.

On Sunday, Egypt said it would support South Africa’s lawsuit at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, a day after it said it would refuse to coordinate aid entering Gaza through Rafah as long as Israel Defense Forces(IDF) troops remain there.

Earlier, information appeared in the media that Egypt could withdraw from its role as a mediator in the Gaza peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
