The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Ms Kaja Kallas, visited EUFOR Headquarters at Camp Butmir on Wednesday as part of her official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ms Kallas was welcomed to EUFOR Headquarters by COM EUFOR Major General Maurizio Fronda and EU Ambassador and EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina H.E. Luigi Soreca. During her visit, Ms Kallas met with EUFOR personnel from contributing nations and expressed her appreciation for their professionalism, dedication and commitment. She reaffirmed the European Union’s enduring support for Bosnia and Herzegovina and highlighted the important role EUFOR continues to play through its visible, credible and impartial presence.

Addressing the audience, Ms Kallas emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between international partners and domestic institutions in preserving stability and strengthening security. She noted that Operation ALTHEA remains a tangible demonstration of the European Union’s commitment to peace, partnership and long-term stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following her visit to Camp Butmir, Ms Kallas attended a live humanitarian demining demonstration conducted by a civilian demining company operating under the supervision of EUFOR’s Joint Military Affairs (JMA) Branch.

The demonstration showcased modern mine-clearance procedures, specialised equipment and highly trained personnel working to reduce the threat posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance. The demining activities are funded by the European Union and represent an important contribution to improving human security and supporting communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Through its support for demining activities, the European Union continues to contribute directly to the safety and well-being of citizens throughout the country. COM EUFOR Major General Maurizio Fronda reaffirmed EUFOR’s commitment to working alongside domestic authorities and international partners in support of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ensuring that Operation ALTHEA remains a reliable partner in maintaining peace and stability.

The visit underscored the European Union’s comprehensive commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina, combining support for security, stability and humanitarian initiatives that contribute to a safer future for all citizens.
