EUFOR ALTHEA, in cooperation with the Italian Red Cross, conducted a five-day International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Course for members of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina and international EUFOR staff at the Army Hall in Sarajevo from 18 to 22 May 2026. The initiative forms part of EUFOR’s ongoing support to the institutions and Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a focus on strengthening professional military education and operational readiness.

Throughout the course, participants received instruction from experienced experts and trainers from the Italian Red Cross, covering the core principles of International Humanitarian Law, including the distinction between combatants and civilians, proportionality, precaution, and the protection of prisoners of war and vulnerable persons during armed conflict.

Beyond legal frameworks, the training emphasised the ethical foundations of military conduct, aiming to further develop professionalism, responsibility, and respect for the rule of law among Armed Forces personnel.

With more than two decades of presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, EUFOR ALTHEA continues to support local institutions by contributing to capacity building and strengthening national capabilities. Initiatives such as this demonstrate EUFOR’s commitment to investing in the knowledge, professionalism, and future development of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The participation of the Italian Red Cross, bringing extensive humanitarian experience and recognised expertise in International Humanitarian Law, added significant value to the course and highlighted the shared commitment to humanitarian principles and international cooperation.
