Exhumation starts in BiH in search of Remains of Murdered Detainees

An exhumation in search of the remains of the victims of the past war is being carried out at the Buk Bijela site today, under the order of the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina submitted a request for the exhumation to the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina, after receiving a report in October of this year that a worker during construction works at this location spotted remains believed to be of human origin.

Investigators from the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina immediately went to the field, and the work was then suspended until the exhumation was scheduled.

“When it comes to this location, there have long been certain indications and information that in this wider area, in the Buk Bijela HPP complex, there is a mass grave of bodies belonging to the war camp detainees from the Foča Penitentiary, whose remains are still being searched for.

Namely, in 2006, the remains of 43 detainees from the Penitentiary Center in Foča were found in the tunnels at the Buk Bijela site,” Emza Fazlić, spokeswoman of the MPI BiH told FENA.

The search is still on for the remains of around 150 detainees from Foča, and Fazlić reminds that around 250 detainees have disappeared from the Foča Penitentiary.

A hundred victims were found at the Buk Bijela site and in other graves in the area of the municipalities of Foča and Kalinovik.

When it comes to the area of Foča, around 627 victims of the past war are still being searched for.
