I expect the “Green Light” for BiH at tomorrow’s Meeting of the EU

covic“I am sure that by accepting adaptation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement we made a sufficient step forward in order to get the green light for the continuation of our European path at tomorrow’s meeting of the EU,” said the Croatian member of the Presidency of BiH, Dragan Covic, before tomorrow’s meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the EU.

However, he warned that we showed once again our weakness “to make decisions very slowly and in the end we always need a partner who will encourage us to do what we were supposed to do at the first place.”

Covic said that on the occasion of today’s birthday of Angela Merkel he sent a personal letter of congratulations to the German chancellor for her involvement and said that he believes that the EU will keep a hand of support that it provided to BiH.

“I expect a questionnaire very soon that would give us a chance to faster, more organized and more responsibly than ever create an environment to get the candidacy status by the end of the next year. I think that BiH citizens deserve and expect it from us, and from these few examples that we have had recently, we finally must realize that we must not transfer our internal disagreements to the relationship that we are building with partners from Europe and the world,” said Covic.

Commenting on speculations on non-fulfillment of all the conditions set by the EU, Covic said that the formal conditions required for this phase have been met, but that many new conditions without which we will not get candidacy status are expecting us very soon.

“This means that we must do much more required for the functioning of the rule of law, absolutely resolve the issue of the implementation of the verdict of the court in Strasbourg, and of course, our internal organization must be adapted to the EU, because we cannot obtain the candidacy status and leave a lot of relations in BiH to representatives of international institutions. If we want to be part of the EU, we must be able to make decisions quickly,” concluded Covic.
