Fidel Castro, for many people a symbol of socialism and anti-imperialism, often wore two Rolexes on his left hand.
One of them was Rolex GMT, and the second was Rolex Submariner. He was asked once why is he wearing two watches at a time, and Castro allegedly said that one serves as a “backup”, in case the first stops working.”
However, one of the first photos that shows that Castro is wearing two Rolexes at once was recorded in 1963 during his visit to Moscow. Many people think that he was wearing two watches in order to keep track on time in Moscow and Havana, as well as Washington.
Of course, as usual, there is a conspiracy theory for the purpose of second Rolex. According to this theory, Castro was “olocha”, a member of the religion Santeria from the territory of West Africa, from where it came to the Caribbean.
Santeria is based on rituals that are passed on from generation to generation orally, and its followers have to constantly wear a bracelet on their hands for “protection”. Some people state that Castro used the second Rolex to cover up that bracelet. But whatever was the reason, many of his fans will be soothed by the fact that at a time when Castro wore a Rolex on his wrist, it was not a status symbol, but it was only considered for one of the most accurate watches of that time.
