dunjamOSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatović, was awarded Médaille Charlemagne for 2015. That is the biggest award on European level, when it comes to human rights and intercession in the field of media. Mijatović is the first person from the region of South East Europe that has received this award.

Since 2000, Médaille Charlemagne Award has been assigned to European personalities for outstanding contributions in the field of media. It is assigned to an individual or organization, and some of the previous winners are Win Wanders, Tymothy Ahton Grath, Fatih Akin, Reporters without Borders, the European Film Academy, etc.

Awarding ceremony will be held on April 30 in Aachen, Germany.

Mayor of Aachen, Marcel Philip, warned that the repression of the media is still present in some European countries.

‘’If journalists are being intimidated, or threatened, or even killed, that’s a call for us to defend freedom. Dunja Mijatovic is doing this job adequately, and I’m very glad that a woman from South East Europe, a region which is unfortunately often out of focus of Europe, was awarded’’, said Phillip.

The award is conferred by the association of Médaille Charlemagne pour les Médias Européens, which was founded in 2006 on the initiative of the LFM and the city of Aachen. The medal was designed by the artist Angela Katzy.
