Foreign Currency Savers in BiH are seeking Help

The Association for the Protection of Foreign Currency Savers in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) calls on the High Representative for BiH Christian Schmidt to enable the implementation of Annex 6 of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which is a key regulator of the judiciary and protects human rights in BiH.

The President of the Board of Directors of the Association, Amila Omersoftic, said at the press conference that the annex has been practically out of function since 2003 and that without that they cannot exercise their rights in BiH.

”We are waiting to be welcomed by the High Representative, so he could understand the gravity of the problem and take responsibility for the implementation of Annex 6, that is, ensure as soon as possible that savers, after 30 years, are urgently paid their savings,” she stated.

According to the Association, BiH has taken responsibility for the payment of savings with domestic banks and has committed to, in cooperation with international institutions, helping savers to collect their savings from Slovenia and Serbia.

”We will fight for this for sure, the teams are already working out which courts outside of BiH we will go. However, advocating for the state and protecting human rights is more important to us than honestly earned money. The High Representative can take care of that,” Omersoftic emphasized.

The Association for the Protection of Foreign Currency Savers in BiH recalls that, despite two judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, more than 25.000 savers failed to return their foreign currency funds given to banks in BiH, Slovenia, and Serbia.
