Former BiH veterans protests caused traffic collapse on major highway

Former veterans of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH) army have been blocking the highway towards the capital Sarajevo, causing a traffic collapse here on Wednesday evening, local media reported.

Some 5 000 former veterans have blocked the Tuzla loop, a city some 120 kilometres northeast of capital Sarajevo and Sarajevo loop on Wednesday morning and will remain there until the requests submitted to the Parliament of the Federation of BiH are fulfilled. Protestors are asking for the abolishment of veteran organizations that are not in accordance with a BiH law and the establishment of the accurate veterans register, local media said.

The traffic is completely suspended at the intersection in Sarajevo where the highway for Zenica and Tuzla is starting, was confirmed to local media from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Canton Sarajevo.

The highway blockage has been recorded in Zenica as well, a city some 70 kilometers northwest of the capital Sarajevo.

Police from Sarajevo Canton is securing the protests here.Ministry of the Internal Affairs of Tuzla Canton confirmed to the local media that police officers are controlling the protests in Tuzla as well.

Citizens of BiH told the local media that they are trapped in the traffic for hours with children, out of water and food on sub-zero temperatures.

 Due to traffic collapse at several locations in BiH, there have been significant delays of buses in international and intercity lines.
