Since yesterday, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has officially been part of the global Google Street View community, making it possible to virtually explore the most beautiful destinations and natural wonders of our country. This innovative tool provides citizens, tourists, and all interested individuals with a unique opportunity to explore the most important sites, landmarks, and attractions through digital platforms.
During yesterday’s presentation in Sarajevo, Google Maps operations director Armin Hamidovic expressed satisfaction that the project they had been working on for a long time was finally launched in BiH.
“We are happy to launch Street View in BiH today, enabling our users to virtually explore the most beautiful parts of this country. This is a major step in the cartography of BiH. There are endless possibilities that this service brings to BiH companies and individuals,” Hamidovic said yesterday.
He added that thanks to Street View, it will be possible to integrate images and maps to help customers more easily find locations, as well as to assist tourists in planning their trips by displaying beautiful landmarks, cities, and many other attractions. All of this, as he emphasized, aims to enable small and medium-sized businesses to become more efficient, increase their digital presence on maps, and achieve better results.
“Now the whole world can see what BiH looks like on the maps, share that data with friends, and prepare for their trip. We started the entire process in 2024, and we will update the maps every year because this is seasonal work. The base map of BiH is now much better, and it will help all other services improve their operations. I assume we have mapped all the cities of BiH – maybe we missed a road or two, but we’ll correct that,” he explained.
Hamidovic emphasized that the project was implemented with particular attention to the protection of privacy and compliance with all relevant regulations, so that the beauty of BiH would be accessible in the simplest possible way. Street View is dedicated to protecting user privacy through advanced technology that automatically blurs faces and license plates in images. Google also provides easy-to-use tools for reporting issues, allowing users to request that images of their house, car, or themselves be blurred on Street View.
The representative of the Federal Administration for Geodetic and Property-Legal Affairs (FGU), Jasmin Catic, stated that the introduction of Street View is an important step toward the digitalization and promotion of BiH on the global map.
“The arrival of the Google Street View service in BiH is of special importance for us, as it builds upon our cooperation with Google in the field of sharing spatial data from the register of spatial units and the address register of the Federation of BiH (FBiH). This is another step toward open, reliable, and modern spatial data and services that connect BiH with global digital services and bring real benefits to every citizen,” Catic said.
With the help of Google Street View cars, more than 30.000 kilometers were recorded from Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Trebinje, Tuzla, Zenica, Bijeljina, Bihac, and other places. In this way, rich panoramic images were created, enabling virtual tours of the most important parts of BiH.
These images show the country’s most famous landmarks – from Sarajevo’s City Hall and Bascarsija, through UNESCO monuments in Mostar, Visegrad, and Stolac, to the Kastel Fortress in Banja Luka and the beautiful views of the Vrbas River.
Google Street View is a technology that enables virtual viewing of streets and landscapes around the world through the Google Maps platform. Using panoramic photographs taken by special vehicles equipped with cameras, users can “walk” through cities, villages, landmarks, and natural landscapes, exploring even the most remote places from the comfort of their own home. This technology provides a realistic, detailed, and authentic representation of landscapes, sites, and cultural heritage, Federalna writes.
